Retired Bishop Ken Carder and the Rev. Dr. Scott Hughes will once again be offering a three-month teaching symposium based on Ken’s book, Ministry with the Forgotten: Dementia through a Spiritual Lens. The series, beginning in February, is being offered through UMC’s Discipleship Ministries and is open to all who who are interested - church leaders, congregational care staff, professional and family caregivers.

In this three-month series, participants will read Ministry with the Forgotten and have the opportunity to share their thoughts with others about ministry with those who are living with dementia and the caregivers of those individuals. Bishop Carder will participate in three live webinars to answer participants’ questions and offer his own reflections with the hope that care ministries, instead of being seen on the periphery, will be seen as an integral part of the discipleship of the whole church.

Some of the main outcomes of this course will be a basic understanding of dementia and its prevalence; an ability to reflect on dementia as a theological challenge and opportunity; insight and tools for entering the world of people with dementia; caring for the caregivers among us; and more.
