Director of Children’s Ministry and Discipleship

Belmont United Methodist Church (“BUMC”) is presently seeking candidates for the position of Director of Children’s Ministry and Discipleship to work under the Senior Pastor and alongside other staff and congregational leaders in the area of children’s ministry as well as in the discipleship of the entire church family.

Responsibilities:

Children’s Ministry

The Director will be responsible for coordinating children’s ministry activities, ensuring that children’s spiritual educational needs are met and that children are actively involved in the life of the congregation. The Director will vision, plan, and advocate for children, particularly in the areas of faith development, safety and discipleship. Other responsibilities are as follows:

  • Building relationships with children and their families
  • Overseeing implementation of the Sunday School curriculum and recruiting and supporting teachers, volunteers and partners in ministry
  • Working with an engaged and robust Children’s Ministry Committee to serve as partners in ministry in visioning and implementation
  • Providing leadership for children’s ministry programming, especially on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings
  • Coordinating and planning for key annual events in children’s ministry, including Vacation Bible School, All Church Retreat, Children’s Sabbath, kindergarten prayer friends and third grade bibles
  • Collaborating with the Children’s Music Ministry Director and supporting the children’s music ministry
  • Coordinating the integration of children during worship services, including reaching out to visiting families
  • Ensuring adherence to the Safe Sanctuaries policy
  • Supporting the Golden Triangle Fellowship children as a part of children’s programming (The Golden Triangle Fellowship is a community of immigrants and refugees from Thailand, Myanmar and Burma that are members of our church and worships in Belmont UMC’s chapel)
  • Working with the nursery coordinator to ensure our nursery provides hospitality and is a safe and welcoming place for our youngest guests
  • Working with the Belmont Weekday School to coordinate and support this ministry

Discipleship

The Director will support the mission of the church and the spiritual formation of its members by:

  • Leading the discipleship team
  • Resourcing adult Sunday School classes
  • Working with the welcoming team to connect people to Sunday School classes
  • Organizing church wide educational opportunities
  • Leading the All Church Retreat
  • Planning church-wide Advent and Lent devotionals
  • Organizing weekday and weekend classes
  • Organizing Midweek at Belmont, a weekly Wednesday night meal and fellowship time during the school year
  • Working closely with church members to strengthen the prayer and devotional life of the church
  • Supporting covenant and small groups
  • Participating with other clergy and laity in leading of worship and preparation of liturgy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Spiritual Gifts and Qualifications:

The Director should show evidence of passion for ministry with children and deep interest in and commitment to faith formation of the entire church family.  The ideal candidate would possess:

  • Willingness to promote and teach values consistent with Belmont’s welcoming statement
  • Prior experience and leadership in children’s ministry or children’s education
  • Knowledge of the polity of the United Methodist Church and Wesleyan theology and also striving to be in a relationship with God
  • An understanding of and training in of child development
  • Evidence of work that has promoted active and growing discipleship
  • Knowledge of the importance of Safe Sanctuary for ministry safety and success
  • The ability to listen to and communicate with people of all ages
  • The ability to work successfully on a ministry team
  • A four-year Bachelor’s degree and theological training
  • Cross-cultural competency and experience
  • Prior experience with or knowledge of Godly Play Curriculum is a plus
  • The spiritual gifts of servanthood, teaching, encouragement, leadership and administration
