Prophetic voices of justice often rise in tumultuous times, when people are straining to hear the voice of God. On Wednesday evenings, September 10, 17, and 24, we will explore several prophetic voices, both ancient and contemporary, in hopes of hearing God speak to us in our own challenging cultural moment.
On September 10 and 24, Paul Franklyn, longtime Belmonter and engaging teacher, will lead sessions on several Hebrew Bible prophets and how their witness can guide us to live faithfully today.
On September 17, Dr. James Byrd, Professor of American Religious History and Chair of Wesleyan Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School, will explore Frederick Douglass as a modern prophet. Douglass not only frequently quoted the biblical prophets but also offered his own prophetic witness as a formerly enslaved person who lived through slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the rise of Jim Crow.
Join us on September 10, 17, and 24 at 6:00pm in room 124. As we listen to these voices of prophetic wisdom, perhaps we will discover our own prophetic voice for today.
