Partnering in hope: Updates from Belmont UMC’s Outreach Committee

As the seasons shift and spring moves us toward summer, we’re excited to share how your support and involvement continue to make a difference in our partnership with Ebenezer UMC, a growing and vibrant faith community in West Nashville. Each week, we’ll share programs, new collaborations, and acts of compassion that help us witness the beauty of connection and the impact of community-based ministry.

Celebrating ESL graduates at Ebenezer UMC

ESL classes at Ebenezer will conclude on May 6, and we invite the Belmont community to join in a joyful Graduation Ceremony and reception on Sunday, May 25 at 4:00 p.m. in Ebenezer UMC’s sanctuary. This special event will not only honor adult learners but also celebrate their children, many of whom will be recognized and will share in the entertainment. It’s a beautiful expression of family and perseverance, and all are welcome.

Looking ahead, ESL classes are expected to resume this fall, in sync with the Metro school calendar. There is an ongoing need for volunteer teachers and individuals who can provide care for children during class time. Those interested are encouraged to reach out to Jane Dubose or Mary Walker.

A Promising Summer Partnership with HOPE

In an exciting new collaboration, Ebenezer will host a six-week summer school program in partnership with HOPE, an academically focused nonprofit organization. The program will run from June 2 to July 11, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each weekday. Mornings will focus on reading and math, followed by fun, enriching activities in the afternoon. Ten children from Ebenezer families are already planning to attend, and HOPE will welcome additional children from the wider community. The program is open to students entering Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Tuition is $150 per week, and thanks to generous contributions, six Ebenezer children already have full tuition covered. We are pleased to share that Belmont’s Outreach Committee has committed to covering tuition for two additional students, helping ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation. Parents are also contributing toward tuition, and HOPE has proven to be a deeply committed partner, already collaborating on resource sharing and fundraising efforts. This is a meaningful step forward in supporting educational equity in West Nashville.

Exploring an After-School Program

Looking further down the road, HOPE and Ebenezer are exploring the possibility of launching an after-school care program at Ebenezer beginning in the 2025–2026 school year. This would meet a critical need for working families in the area, and as the vision takes shape, we anticipate opportunities for Belmont to assist with scholarships and program support.

Staffing Support at Ebenezer

The Ebenezer Search Committee is close to concluding its search for a part-time Community Development staff member, a role that will focus on grant writing and fundraising to strengthen program sustainability. With Pastor Cortes currently serving as the sole staff member, this new addition will offer much-needed support and capacity for growth.

March 9 Legal Clinic

The March 9 Clinic at Ebenezer was a powerful day of service and solidarity, attended by 25 Belmonters and friends. With the guidance of legal professionals, 12 families (representing 19 children) completed Power of Attorney for a Minor Child documents, offering peace of mind in case of emergencies involving arrest or detention. A warm and generous lunch, prepared and served by members of the Covenant Class and the Edwards family, helped foster a sense of community and conversation between Ebenezer and Belmont. Thank you to all who gave time, energy, and resources to make this day possible.

Looking to the Future

Long-term, Ebenezer continues to move toward two major goals: achieving financial stability for its young congregation and building a Child Development Center to serve not only Ebenezer families but also other underserved children in West Nashville. These efforts represent a bold and hopeful vision—one that we at Belmont are honored to support.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Your prayers, presence, and generosity help bring hope, opportunity, and dignity to families in our extended community.
