Africa University (AU) has named Noel Salephera Kumbemba, an 18-year-old student from Malawi, as the recipient of Belmont UMC’s Jason Samuel Kite Memorial Scholarship. Africa University is our United Methodist university on the continent of Africa. Located in Zimbabwe, it has over 2500 students from 25 African countries.

Belmont UMC supports AU through a scholarship set up in memory of my son, Jason Kite. Jason traveled to AU in 2000 as part of a VIM team working on faculty housing construction. After his untimely death later that year, the team founded this scholarship in his memory.

My husband, Herb, and I have been inspired by the AU graduates we have met through our work in Malawi over the years. In 2016 we were finally able to visit AU and see for ourselves how this university is making an impact for good on the African continent.

Jason was studying horticulture when he died in December of 2000. That same month, a little boy named Noel was born in Malawi and dreams of learning and working in agriculture. When you have the opportunity to give to this important mission, please say YES! Hold our student, Noel, in prayer that he may complete his studies successfully and return to help build up his home country, our beloved Malawi.
