In the Community Center. Meet two of the lawyers on the front lines of the U.S. Supreme Court battle for marriage equality and hear from their new book that recounts the experiences leading up to this landmark case.
In 2015, attorneys Bill Harbison and Phil Cramer represented several same-sex couples who sued for the right to marry. In their new book The Fight for Marriage: Church Conflicts and Courtroom Contests they describe the legal and church history of marriage – and our assumptions about it – as well as the personal, spiritual, and legal milestones that led to marriage equality for all.
With a first-hand account of the courtroom drama concerning marriage in American communities and states, Harbison and Cramer show why states care about marriage and how the church and the state function in partnership to foster the purposes and social benefits of marriage. They share the stories of the families represented and discuss how their Christian faith motivates their pursuit of social justice.
Hosted by Belmonters for Inclusion, this special event will include a book signing with the authors after their discussion of the book. Parnassus Books will be there if you would like to buy a copy of the book. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served. The event will take place at 6:30pm in Belmont UMC’s Community Center.
