Belmont
Properties Committee
The
primary purpose of the Properties Committee is to support
the ministries of the Church. To accomplish this purpose the committee
is charged with the following:
1. Provide attractive spaces that are conducive to worship and
the
implementation of Belmont's ministries.
2. Maintain the physical plant
3. Maintain grounds and parking areas
4. Maintain to a limited extent all properties owned by the Church: 1901
20th
Avenue South (Home Place) and 1909 Acklen Avenue
(Hillsboro Imaging)
5. Maintain office, janitorial, kitchen, classroom, medical, and
audio-visual
equipment
6. Provide an accessible building
7. Provide a safe building for children and adults
8. Maintain mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
9. Maintain furnishings
10. Work with Music Committee to maintain organ and pianos

2004 Accomplishments
1. Stone façade of building surrounding memorial garden-clean,
tuckpointed and sealed. BUMC Trust Fund $19,423.

2. Stone repaired between chapel and sanctuary. Trust Fund $4,434.
3. Replaced air-conditioning unit 20th Avenue building, 2nd floor. Trust
Fund $18,979.
4. Video monitoring system for children's area/WDS and music rooms on
2nd floor. Trust Fund $3,100.
5. Installed new ceiling, lighting, 2 lavatories and faucets in 2nd
floor women's bathroom. Properties budget. The ceiling was damaged
several years ago when roofs were leaking.
6. Put sign at corner of 21st and Acklen on timer.
7. New irrigation system in Memorial Garden.
8. Painting done in Thomasson Hall hallway and stairwells in Sunday
School wing by volunteers from Graham Inquirers class and Lennie.
9. Purchased 2 round tables for Parker Hall.
10. Sound system installed in Parker Hall. Paid for by funds from
Chancel renovation
11. New soap dispensers, towel bars, & paint on men's &
handicapped bathrooms adjacent to Parker Hall.
12. Painted most of Parker Hall.
13. Replaced 2 window air-conditioning units in music room. 1 unit paid
for by Properties and 1 paid for by a generous donor.
14. Pruned bushes by Gym
15. Braced cracked beam under Thomasson Hall
16. Had termite damage repaired professionally
17. Carpeted youth director's office
18. Worked on security system with ADS to eliminate false alarms.
19. Replaced ceiling fixtures in Community Center and Gym
2005 Accomplishments
1. Landscaped Memorial Garden. Generous donation
2. Brought one back-up boiler on-line. The other back-up boiler is
beyond repair and was disconnected from electrical and water.
(requirement of our insurer) Trust Fund $3,500.
3. Repaired and re-asphalted the driveway behind the playground. Trust
Fund $2,000.
4. Add sod and railroad ties to the slope between the driveway and
Magnolia Boulevard. Trust Fund $1,588.
5. Limestone restoration of the 21st Avenue side of the Sanctuary
building. Trust Fund $21,390.
6. Patched columns on exterior of Thomasson Hall 21st Avenue entrance.
Trust Fund $875.
7. Replaced handrail on stairs to choir room.
8. Added another brace to beam under Thomasson Hall after consulting
with Rod Buchanan, structural engineer and member of Belmont UMC.
9. Painted rooms 202 and 203. Volunteers from the Covenant and Seekers
Classes.
10. Painted 4 offices on second floor in preparation for new staff.

11. Painted part of the Community Center with the help of the Aldersgate
Class
12. Structural engineer made suggestions on how to handle the cracked
beam under Thomasson Hall and the twisted truss in the attic of
Thomasson Hall.
13. Men's foyer bathroom was painted and door was adjusted to prevent
sticking
14. Painted benches in Memorial Garden
15. Purchased 3 new lightweight 8 foot long folding tables.
16. Purchased wide vacuum cleaner for use in the Sanctuary and Parker
Hall.
17. Upgraded water heater in community center for showers for Room in
the Inn.
18. Put brass kick plates on main Sanctuary doors
19. Pressure wash sidewalks on 21st and Acklen Avenue to remove mold and
stains
20. Installed 2 water fountains in children's area
21. Replaced 2 lavatories and faucets in women's restroom next to youth
director's office
22. Worked with Building Committee to get structural problems in
Thomasson Hall fixed.
23. Sealed driveway
24. Lennie built new platforms in the balcony for the bell tables.
Note: if another source of funding was not indicated, the project was
paid for with monies from the Properties Budget.

Properties
Committee Goals for 2006
1. Replace roofs on Sanctuary and Education Wing Buildings.
2. Finish glazing and prime the windows of Thomasson Hall,
Administrative Wing, Education Wing, and the Sanctuary Building.
3. Clean, tuck point, and seal the stone on Sanctuary building and
remainder of Administrative Wing, especially in the alley between the
two buildings.
4. Replace water fountain in Parker Hall and 2nd floor of 20th Avenue
building
5. Paint Sanctuary ceiling where stained from water leaks.
6. Paint benches in Memorial Garden
7. Degrease and paint the Parker Hall kitchen
8. Replace ceiling tiles in rooms 201 and 203.
9. Pressure wash sidewalks on 21st and Acklen Avenue to remove mold and
stains.
10. Carpet seams in WDS and Graham Inquirer's rooms are badly worn.
11. Plumbing needs evaluation as toilets flush slowly and the backflow
that water for the entire building passes through fills up every year
with trash.
12. Repair exterior metal handrails leading up to main Sanctuary doors.
13. Determine if donated washer and dryer is actually wanted by the
staff. If it is wanted then install.
14. Paint or replace ceiling of Gayle Sullivan's office and bell room
15. Develop a system for memorializing memorials.
16. Art at Belmont Committee is under Properties Committee auspices.
17. Develop a month-by-month chart of landscaping needs for the
janitorial staff.
18. Purchase new refrigerator for Parker Hall kitchen
19. Prioritize needs to be met by the Capital Campaign such as the
following:
20. Heating system throughout buildings must be reevaluated.
21. Replace cooling towers
22. Install donated washer and dryer in Community Center.
23. Repair stained glass window above Acklen Avenue entrance to
Sanctuary.
24. Work with Music committee to see organ and pianos are maintained.
25. Encourage the staff and others to use Lennie's blue book to request
services.
26. Building Committee: many of the above items need to be coordinated
with the Building Committee.
27. Properties will have to prioritize what can be accomplished through
the funds from the Capital Campaign. Items to consider are roofs,
windows, carpeting, painting interior and exterior, stone work, HVAC,
and plumbing.
28. How best to use the new landscaping and new irrigations system in
the Memorial Garden if either or both of these is to be affected by the
relocation of the playgrounds.

Volunteer
Opportunities
1. There is always an opportunity to work on maintenance of
the grounds.
2. Lennie Minter can use help with various painting projects.
3. New valences or drapes are needed in some of the classrooms. Someone
is needed to make the window treatments.
4. In general, Properties budget monies can be used to purchase
supplies.
