Reflections for August 20, 2010

(On the first Saturday night of each month Nashvillians are treated to an art crawl where visitors can move through the art galleries downtown along 4th and 5th Avenues.)

Kathryn and I joined the throng of people who moved from gallery to gallery last week. On the first Thursdays of each month, there is an art walk in Hillsboro Village—an exciting new addition to the neighborhood experience. Belmont is exploring ways to be more involved in this experience. Cheekwood and the Frist Museum have some spectacular exhibits at present. Great things are happening in the art scene in our city.

Last week when a Belmont member confided to feeling a little low in spirit, I took her by the hand and led her to the gallery wall outside of Ferguson Chapel. The current art exhibit includes the creations of Belmont’s children. Before we knew it we were both feeling more hopeful and smiling as we looked at the creative expressions of children. Not only are the paintings wonderful and a delight to the eye, but the names given to the pieces are beautiful and inspiring. Names like: Princess Flower, Sunshine Walk, Sunset on a Peaceful Park, Rainbow Mixed with Kids, or one of my favorites, Different Things Like Purple Grass for Kids to Find. These art offerings from the children draw us into the sacred, enabling all of us to appreciate God’s gifts.

This exhibit will be an annual event called Popsicle Summer. The “Pop” art event was kicked off on August 1 with a popsicle party on the sidewalk in front of the chapel. Thanks to the Belmont Arts Council for making this exhibit a reality and for sharing the hopeful gifts of our children with the rest of us. Great things are happening in the art scene at Belmont UMC.
As people of faith, we have the opportunity to influence the lives of others in a positive way. People around you are paying attention to the choices you make and the values that guide your journey. Take some time to consider and pray for the people who are depending on you for encouragement and support.
