Reflections for August 13, 2010

One of the persons who influenced me most during those days was my pastor, Reverend Tom Eblen. Tom was a student pastor, working on his degree at Vanderbilt Divinity School. He was energetic, patient, and loving, and his friendship during those years was a true gift. He was the first person to suggest the possibility that I might be called to serve in the church—a notion that I immediately rejected. On Sunday, Belmont hosted 50 persons from the School for Congregational Development, meeting here in Nashville. As we served Communion, I offered the bread to each person, calling many by name, especially those visiting because they wore nametags. I offered a piece of bread to one worshiper, and said, “The body of Christ for you, Tom.” I realized that the recipient of the bread was my friend, Tom Eblen, whom I have not seen in 15 years. I reached over the chancel and embraced him; I could not hold back the tears.
Several weeks ago, I received an email from a young woman from a former church. She was asking me to officiate at her upcoming wedding. Though her wedding is at a time that I cannot be present, she went into some detail about the influence I had been in her life. This surprised me and made me aware that we have the opportunity to influence others, even when we are not aware of it.
My mother recently celebrated a birthday and her nieces and nephew, whose own parents have died over the last year, threw her a wonderful birthday party. She has always been a loving and kind presence in their lives, but her encouragement and love have meant so much to them during the last year. Over the years, I have watched as my parents have loved and influenced the lives of many younger adults, and I am grateful for their example.
As people of faith, we have the opportunity to influence the lives of others in a positive way. People around you are paying attention to the choices you make and the values that guide your journey. Take some time to consider and pray for the people who are depending on you for encouragement and support.
